general membership information

We welcome eligible candidates for membership in our two classifications of Companionship:

Veteran, for officers, active, retired or honorably discharged, who have served in or during a foreign war campaign and/or expedition (see list below);

Hereditary, for descendants of officers with such service dating from the War of the Revolution to the present.

The Annual dues rate is $35.00. The Commandery also offers Life Memberships for those Companions so interested. The rates are by age grouping:

  • Under age 50: $600
  • Ages 50-59: $400
  • Ages 60-69: $300
  • Ages 70 and over: $200

Dues, whether term or life, are tax deductible.

Criteria for Companionship in the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States

Companionship in the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States is conferred on duly qualified, duly sponsored officers – both commissioned and warrant. Active military service in or during any of our foreign wars or military expeditions will qualify an officer as a Veteran Companion, as will honorable services as a commissioned officer in the armed forces of our allies. Individuals who served in an enlisted status during such wars or expeditions, and who were subsequently commissioned or warranted as an officer, will qualify as a Veteran Companion. Descent from such an officer may also qualify an individual for Hereditary or Junior Companionship.

Such service must be satisfactorily shown to have been performed in one of the following wars or expeditions:

  • The American Revolution (1775-1783)
  • The War with Tripoli (1801-1805)
  • The War of 1812 (1812-1815)
  • The Mexican War (1846-1848)
  • The Spanish-American War (1898-1899)
  • The Philippine Insurrection (1899-1906)
  • The China Relief Expedition (1900-1901)
  • The Nicaraguan Campaign (1912)
  • The Vera Cruz Campaign (1914)
  • The Mexican Campaign (1916-1917)
  • Mexican Border Service (1916-1917)
  • World War I (1917-1921)
  • World War II (1941-1946)
  • The Korean War (1950-1954)
  • The Vietnam War (1958-1973)
  • The Grenada Expedition (1983)
  • The Panama Expedition (1989-1990)
  • The Somalia Expedition (1992-1993)
  • The Haitian Expedition (1994-1995)
  • The Bosnia-Herzegovina Expedition (1992 to the present)

The Persian Gulf Conflict, between the 2nd day of August, 1990 and the 30th day of November, 1995, regardless of place of service, provided the person has been awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal or the National Defense Service Medal.

The Kosovo Campaign after the 24th day of March, 1999, provided the person has been awarded the Kosovo Campaign Medal.

The Global War on Terrorism on or after the 11th day of September, 2001, regardless of place of service, provided the person has been awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal or the National Defense Service Medal.

The Afghanistan Campaign on or after the 24th day of October, 2001, regardless of place of service, provided the person has been awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal or the National Defense Service Medal.

The Iraq Campaign on or after the 19th day of March, 2003, regardless of place of service, provided the person has been awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal or the National Defense Service Medal.

Any overseas expedition subsequent to the 1st day of July, 1958, to such terminal date as may be prescribed by the Secretary of Defense, provided the person has been awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in such expedition.

Any overseas armed forces service subsequent to the 1st day of June, 1992 to such a terminal date as may be prescribed by the Secretary of Defense, provided the person has been awarded the Armed Forces Service Medal for participation in such service.

All men and women who serve during all future wars, expeditions, and/or campaigns with a foreign power, and who hold, or have held, a commission in one of the armed forces, shall be eligible to this Order and all recipients of the:

  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
  • Navy Expeditionary Medal
  • Armed Forces Service Medal
  • Kosovo Campaign Medal
  • War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal
  • Afghanistan Campaign Medal
  • Iraq Campaign Medal

In the future, subsequent wars, campaigns, or expeditions may be added to the above list, as approved by the Companions of the Order.
