A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER
Dear Visitor,
Thank you for visiting the Rhode Island Commandery of the Military Order of Foreign Wars website. I hope you will learn more about our organization and its objectives.
The MOFW was founded in New York City in 1893 and the Rhode Island Commandery was founded in 1900 under the leadership of Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce, the first president of the Naval War College in Newport.
The Order’s purpose is best described in the preamble of our national constitution –
“to honor and perpetuate the names of brave and loyal men and women; to keep in mind the memory of their martial deeds and the victories which they helped to gain; to strengthen the ties of fellowship among the Companions of the Order; to foster the cultivation of Military and Naval Science; and to aid in maintaining National Honor, Union and Independence;” we are actively seeking new members. If you are a Veteran commissioned or warrant officer of the United States Armed Forces (Active Duty or Reserve), or the descendant of one who served during the period of a war with a foreign power, you are eligible for membership. Overseas and/or combat service is not a requirement for membership.
The Commandery is currently planning activities which both members and prospective members can participate in. Please check the website for coming events.
Sincerely,
John T. Duchesneau
Commander
Rhode Island Commandery
Military Order of Foreign Wars

We welcome eligible candidates for membership in our two classifications of Companionship:
- Veteran, for officers, active, retired or honorably discharged, who have served in or during a foreign war campaign and/or expedition
- Hereditary, for direct descendants of officers with such service dating from the War of the Revolution to the present.
The Rhode Island Commandery was instituted on 28 February 1900 in Providence. The first Commander was RADM Steven Luce USN, a veteran of the Civil War and founder of the U.S. Naval War College.
